Heat Pump vs Air Conditioning: Which to Choose?

It is one of the most common confusions we come across: are a heat pump and air conditioning the same thing? They use the same underlying technology, but they serve different purposes — and choosing wrong means paying for something that does not solve your problem. Let us separate them.

So what is the difference?

Both work by compressing a refrigerant, and both move heat rather than generating it — which is why they are so efficient. The difference is what they do with that heat.

Air conditioning (an air-to-air heat pump) moves heat between the outside air and the air of a room. It cools in summer, heats in winter, and acts on the air of the room where it is installed.

A heat pump in the sense the term is normally used (air-to-water) moves heat from the outside air into water. That water can feed a hot water cylinder, underfloor heating, radiators or a pool. In other words: instead of conditioning a room, it feeds the systems of the house.

Which heats the house better?

It depends what "the house" means in your case.

If you want to heat one or two rooms — the living room, a bedroom — air conditioning is the most direct and cheapest solution. It heats quickly, installs in a day and solves the problem with minimal disruption. In the mild Algarve climate, it is a fairly efficient way to heat on cold winter evenings.

If you want to heat the whole house evenly, or you also want to solve the hot water, a heat pump is the answer. It delivers steadier, more enveloping warmth, especially with underfloor heating, and handles the hot water with the same machine.

There is also a difference in feel that is rarely mentioned: air conditioning heats by blowing warm air, which some people find uncomfortable or drying. A water-based system heats without draughts. For anyone spending many hours in the room, that counts more than the numbers suggest.

Which saves more?

Both are efficient, but they save in different places.

Air conditioning saves compared with electric heaters and is unbeatable on the ratio between installation cost and immediate comfort in a single room. A heat pump saves above all on hot water: a heat pump cylinder typically consumes around a third of the electricity of a conventional electric cylinder. Because hot water is a daily load, all year, that is where the saving accumulates most consistently.

What if you add solar panels?

This is where the conversation changes. Both air conditioning and a heat pump consume electricity mainly during the day — which is exactly when solar panels produce. The combination makes much of the running cost disappear.

It is why, when we are asked to plan a house from scratch, we almost always propose the set: photovoltaic feeding a heat pump and climate control. Each piece on its own is good; together, the running cost approaches zero during sunlight hours.

Installation: how much disruption does each involve

This is a practical criterion that often settles the question in an existing house, and one that rarely appears in technical comparisons.

Air conditioning typically installs in a day per unit. It needs a hole through the wall, a pipe route between indoor and outdoor units, and a power supply. It is minimally invasive and reversible.

A heat pump for hot water is equally simple when it replaces an existing cylinder: it occupies the same plant space and uses the connections already there. But a heat pump for central heating of the house is another matter — it means a water circuit, radiators or underfloor heating, and in an existing building that is serious construction work.

That is why, in light renovations, the most common combination ends up being: a heat pump for the hot water (simple swap, daily saving) and air conditioning in the main rooms (immediate comfort, little disruption). Water-based central heating is reserved for new build or deep renovation, where underfloor heating can go in without breaking up what is already finished.

So which should I choose?

  • I want cooling in summer and heat in one room in winter → air conditioning.
  • I want to solve the hot water and cut the bill all year → heat pump.
  • I want to heat the whole house evenly → heat pump, ideally with underfloor heating.
  • I have a pool and want a longer swimming season → pool heat pump (see pool heating and spas).
  • I want the most complete solution → heat pump for house and hot water + air conditioning in the main rooms, both fed by solar.

In short

They are not competitors — they are complementary. Air conditioning solves comfort in a room; a heat pump solves the energy of the house. Many Algarve houses end up with both, and that is frequently the right combination.
