Log Burners and Wood Burning Stoves for Algarve Homes

Algarve winters catch people out. Days are mild and bright, but evenings turn cold and damp, and most houses here are built to shed summer heat rather than hold winter warmth — thick walls, tiled floors, minimal insulation. A log burner or a wood burning stove solves that in the way an electric heater never quite does: real radiant heat, low running cost, and a room that actually feels dry.

Visky supplies and installs log burners, pellet stoves and fireplace inserts across the region, and we do the whole job — appliance, flue, hearth and commissioning. We represent Attika and Piazzetta, two of the better European manufacturers, and we have been doing this in the Algarve for 33 years.

Log Burner, Pellet Stove or Insert?

  • Log burner (wood burning stove) — freestanding, burns split logs, gives the strongest radiant heat and the flame people actually want to sit next to. Needs somewhere to store dry wood.
  • Pellet stove — burns compressed wood pellets from a hopper, is thermostatically controlled and can be programmed to come on before you get up. Far less handling than logs, needs a power socket.
  • Fireplace insert — fits into an existing open fireplace and transforms it. An open fire sends most of its heat up the chimney; an insert reclaims it, often turning a decorative feature into the main heat source for the room.

The Flue Matters More Than the Stove

Most problems people have with wood burners — poor draw, smoke coming back into the room, glass blackening, tar — are flue problems, not appliance problems. Many Algarve houses have chimneys built for an open fire, which are the wrong size and often the wrong construction for a modern closed appliance. We line or install stainless steel flue systems as part of the job, sized to the appliance, and we will tell you honestly if an existing chimney is not suitable.

This is also a safety matter, not just a performance one. A badly installed closed appliance is a carbon monoxide risk. We install to the manufacturer's specification, with the correct clearances to combustible materials, and we commission the appliance with you before we leave.

Running Costs and Firewood

Firewood in the Algarve is relatively inexpensive and locally available — eucalyptus, olive and holm oak are all common. A modern closed stove extracts far more heat from the same wood than an open fire, so consumption is much lower than people expect. Pellets cost more per unit of heat than logs but are cleaner to handle, store in bags, and suit people who are not in the property full time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need heating in the Algarve?

Most people who move here say the same thing after their first winter: yes. Days are mild but evenings are cold and damp, and Algarve houses are built to stay cool in summer. A log burner is the most effective and cheapest-to-run answer for a main living room.

What is the difference between a log burner and a pellet stove?

A log burner takes split wood, gives stronger radiant heat and a proper flame, but needs loading by hand and dry wood storage. A pellet stove feeds itself from a hopper, is thermostatically controlled and can be programmed, but needs electricity and costs a little more per unit of heat.

Can you fit a stove into my existing fireplace?

Usually yes, with an insert. An open fireplace loses most of its heat up the chimney; an insert reclaims it and often becomes the main heat source for the room. We check the opening and the chimney first, and line the flue as part of the work.

Do you install the chimney or flue as well?

Yes, and it is the part that matters most. Most complaints about wood burners are flue problems, not stove problems. We install stainless steel flue systems sized to the appliance, and we will tell you if an existing chimney is not suitable rather than fit to it anyway.

Is firewood easy to get in the Algarve?

Yes. Eucalyptus, olive and holm oak are all widely available locally and relatively inexpensive. A modern closed stove burns far less of it than an open fire for the same warmth.
