Why the Algarve is ideal for solar energy
The Algarve is one of the sunniest regions in Europe — more than 3,000 hours a year. That means a solar panel system installed in Lagos, Faro or Albufeira produces significantly more energy over the year than the same system in the north of the country.
To give a concrete sense: a well-oriented installation here typically produces more than 1,500 kWh per installed kWp per year. That is considerably more than the same equipment would yield in Germany, the UK or the Netherlands — where, incidentally, many of our customers come from, most of them used to being told that "solar does not pay".
On top of that natural advantage sits an economic one: grid electricity prices have risen consistently. Every kilowatt-hour you produce on your roof is one you stop buying — and that saving grows as electricity gets more expensive. A solar investment is, in that sense, also a hedge against future price rises.
What does it cost to install solar panels?
The cost of a photovoltaic system depends on capacity (how many panels), whether or not batteries are included, and the characteristics of the roof. A typical residential self-consumption system without batteries sits in an accessible range with a payback of a few years; with batteries the investment rises, but you gain the autonomy to use solar energy at night.

How much you can save per year
An average Algarve household installing a well-sized system covers a good part of its daytime consumption — air conditioning, appliances, heat pump, pool. For anyone with a heated pool or a heat pump, the saving is greater still, because that equipment consumes precisely during the day, when the panels produce.
Holiday lets are a particularly favourable case: occupancy peaks in summer, exactly when there is most sun and most solar production. Self-consumption fits the consumption profile of an Algarve rental almost perfectly, with the air conditioning running most of the day through the highest-production months.
There is also a detail many people overlook that costs nothing: shifting consumption into sunlight hours. Programming the washing machine, the pool pump and the water heating for the middle of the day immediately raises the share of your own energy you use, without spending a cent more on the system.
Solar panels with batteries: worth it?
Batteries let you store energy produced during the day for use at night. They increase the initial investment but also your independence from the grid — particularly useful in more isolated houses, of which there are many in Monchique or on the Costa Vicentina, where power cuts are not rare.

And the paperwork?
A self-consumption installation has to be registered as a UPAC with the DGEG. It is a process involving documentation and deadlines, and one of the reasons we recommend the registration be included in the quote rather than left to the customer.
